The most common way to use your Shakti Mat is in bed before sleep. Lying down with the Mat under your back and shoulders works wonderfully, but you can also use it to relieve tension anywhere on your body.
Incorporating the Shakti Mat into your yoga and meditation practice—whether seated or in poses like sphinx and pigeon—can further integrate acupressure into your recovery or wellness routine.
What to anticipate
What to anticipate
Will it hurt? Yes, but just a little at first.
The purpose of those spikes is to quickly activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Initially, your body reacts with an “Ouch!” and your brain kicks into pain response mode.
But after a few minutes, you’ll realize, “Hey, this doesn’t actually hurt” – and that’s when the real transformation begins.
You start to benefit from the surge of serotonin, oxytocin, and other feel-good chemicals flowing through your body. The initial tingling sensation evolves into a comforting warmth, and tension melts away as the acupressure starts to work its wonders.
Acupressure vs acupuncture
Acupressure vs acupuncture
While acupuncture uses needles to penetrate the skin, acupressure relies on spikes to apply pressure. The advantage of a Shakti Mat is that it activates multiple acupoints in the time it takes to lie down on it, without the need for an appointment.
